The Power of…York Cares
The theme for York Festival of Ideas 2024 is The Power Of and there is an amazing programme with over 200 events. We are delighted to be hosting 3 events as part of the festival designed to showcase The Power Of York Cares.
We have aligned one event with each of our 3 key programmes and hope that you will be able to join us at one or more of the events to celebrate and experience our programmes in action!
Green Corridors for Tansy Beetle Conservation
As part of the York Cares Big Community Challenge 2023, volunteers supported St Nicks’ work along the River Ouse Corridor to preserve the endangered Tansy beetle and other local wildlife. Come along and find out more about this work on a gentle 2km walk.
See more information about this activity via the York Festival of Ideas website.
How Language is Used
Explore the different ways languages are used in a fun interactive Kamishibai storytelling session led by Géraldine Enjelvin, Yumi Nixon and Ulrike Wray of the University of York.
Join them for an introduction to French, German and Japanese for beginners through:
- Kamishibai (a traditional Japanese form of storytelling with picture cards)
- Storytelling (based on a Chinese tale)
- Learn how words are used; e.g. numbers, colours
- Learn how to make a paper figure, using origami
Presented by York Cares and the University of York’s Department of Language and Linguistic Science, this event is perfect for children aged seven to 11 and their families. The event is part of our Aspirations programme which is designed to help raise aspirations and enable people from all backgrounds and abilities to reach their full potential.
