James Gerring, Marketing and Sustainability Graduate, Portakabin

James is a committed professional having spent over two years on the Graduate Scheme at Portakabin and six years as a semi-professional football referee. As a Graduate Board Member, James brings his passion for community service to help drive volunteer initiatives across the city of York.

With a proven track record of impactful volunteering, James is committed to fostering collaboration between local people, businesses and community projects. James has volunteered with York Cares on the Aspirations programme, delivering an interactive session on the topic of refereeing to primary school children at The Place, Chapelfields.

James holds a joint honours Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Urban Regional Planning from the University of Birmingham. His university journey includes significant contributions to volunteering in his role as President of the Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Society, ensuring that over 600 undergraduates received the support they needed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Beyond his professional life, James enjoys mentoring and coaching new young referees, which exhibits his commitment to the local community and personal growth.

Katie Lee, Governance Specialist, Brand & Corporate Affairs, Aviva

Katie joined the York Cares graduate board in April 2024. With a degree in Business & Economics, Katie has always had a passion for business. She has several years of experience in Treasury, Project Management, Regulatory Change, and Governance.

Katie is a people person who thrives on community involvement. York Cares allows Katie to channel her enthusiasm and expertise into meaningful initiatives and innovative ideas. Katie also enjoys travelling to new countries and exploring the countryside in her walking boots.

Mia Sparkes, Graduate (Marketing), Portakabin

Mia has experience across commercial, operational and marketing functions which has provided her with experience and knowledge to be able to help shape the strategic direction of York Cares as part of her role on the Graduate board.

Volunteering has always been a part of Mia’s personal and professional life, from student support roles at university to fundraising with charities such as Marie Curie. Outside of work, Mia enjoys snowboarding and travelling to new places.

Mia holds a degree in Sociology from the University of York, the combination of her studies and time at university in the city has driven her passion to create lasting impact and suggest solutions for social change.

Ione Taylor, Brand & Corporate Affairs (Public Affairs) Graduate, Aviva

Ione joined Aviva on their Brand & Corporate Affairs Graduate Scheme last September. Having worked previously in student recruitment and marketing for Newcastle University, she has a passion for widening participation in education and equal opportunities.

On the Graduate board Ione hopes to contribute fresh ideas to York Cares, utilising her previous experiences and collaborating with fellow Graduate Board members. Outside of work, Ione loves going to Parkrun (almost) every Saturday and recommends to any who enjoys spending time outdoors with the community and enjoys running!
